South St. Louis County: A Perfect Pastoral Getaway
South St. Louis County offers a refreshing rural respite from the hustle and bustle of the city of St. Louis, yet it is close enough for day trips from the city. There are many small towns in this section of St. Louis County with their own unique style, which are home to many of the artisans of the area. The Ulysses S. Grant Historic Site, located on the grounds of the Grant’s wife’s family home White Haven. In addition to the opportunity to explore the grounds of this National Park, house tours are available and there are occasional lecture series offered.

The Laumier Sculpture Park provides visitors the chance to explore contemporary sculptures, created in a variety of mediums, in an outdoor natural park setting. The park features both its permanent collection and well as visiting exhibitions. The park offers numerous special events throughout the year. This is a pet friendly venue located at 1250 Rott Road.
Grant’s Farm is located on 281 acres of farmland that is owned by the Busch family, the family who makes Budweiser and other beers. The farm serves as the home to the internationally known Budweiser Clydesdale horses, which guests of the farm can visit. The Bauehof, built by the Busch family in 1913, features an architectural style similar to that in Bavarian barns. The Bauehof is the location of the stable, carriage house, offices and staff offices of Grants Farm. The adults of the family can enjoy complementary tastings of Anheuser Busch products at the Bauehof. The Deer Park and Tier Garden are home to wildlife once native to the area, such as bison, as well as animals from across the globe. Visitors can attend wildlife shows and educational programs at the amphitheater and interact with some of the animals, and there are summer day camps available for children to attend. Additionally, the cabin built by Ulysses S. Grant, known as "Hardscabble," is located on the grounds of Grant’s Farm and is available for tours. Grants Farm is located at 10501 Gravois Road.
Jefferson Barracks Historic Park, located at 533 Grant Road, is a 405-acre park located on the site of an 1826 practice school for the military. This site served as a military installation until the 1940’s. There is a small museum on site as well as an amphitheater. Additionally, there are picnic sites along the Mississippi River.
South St. Louis County is great area to plan a day trip into the countryside or a longer getaway to take time to relax and enjoy nature.
