Questions to Ask a Skilled St Louis Contractor or Service Professional Before You Hire Them

Hiring a skilled contractor or service professional is a great way to get almost anything done professionally and quickly, but you do have to be careful. Researching your options, vetting those options, and holding a short interview before the hire can ensure that you get the most for your money, and that your project turns out well.

Do You Have a License or Permit?  Most states require skilled laborers to have a license or permit in order to operate. Depending on the state, this should be a state permit, or could be from another state. Various occupations that require licensing and permits include construction, plumbing, electricians, pest removal, clearing deadwood and trimming trees, and more.Check online or with your local town hall to see if a permit is required in your area for the service that you want. If not, make sure that you ask about qualifications.

Do You Have References?  References are a great way to make sure that the contractor is good at what they do. Consider asking for references, but remember to double check the results with online review sites like Yelp, Google Local, or Angie's List. You can also ask around to see if friends or family have worked with them in the past to get a good idea of whether or not they are worth hiring.

What Are Your Fees?   It is always a good idea to ask for a price quote and estimate up front, as well as a list of fees so that you can use price comparison when choosing a contractor. Make sure that you compare services offered for the money as well as the actual price.

Do You Offer Guarantees?  Guarantees written into the project contract are important if you want to ensure that the project is finished or you get your money back. Not all contractors offer guarantees on their work so make sure you ask.

Do You Have Insurance?  Insurance is extremely important if you want to protect yourself in case of damage to your home or property. An insured contractor is responsible for any damage that they cause while in your home or business so that you don’t have to worry. Ask about it before you make a hire.

Can I See Your Portfolio?  Almost all skilled St Louis contractors will keep a photo or online portfolio of projects they've worked on, which you can use to see whether or not the quality of their work matches your needs. While not all professions allow for portfolios, the majority do. If not a portfolio, then you can ask about some of their previous projects that you might be able to see.

You can usually determine which contractors suit your needs and which do not by asking a few simple questions, outlining their qualifications, checking fees, and comparing extras such as the number of contractors working on the project. However, it is also important to make sure that you protect yourself by making sure they are certified, have insurance, and guarantee their work before you make a hire.
